5 Lessons about Digital Marketing Learned from Buddy the Elf

1) “The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.”

You have invested, or plan to invest I hope, in great content. But that content will not produce any business value unless you expand your reach. At the most basic level, this can be initially accomplished by sharing your content across your social media channels. As you develop your following and engage with your community, your reach will expand.

2) We all have “special talents”.

Digital marketing is a vast discipline with a variety of channels and skillsets required to be successful. From SEO to paid search to design to project management – it is nearly impossible to be great at everything. And even if you are, one cannot possibly accomplish all of the tasks required to run a successful digital marketing program on their own. Find out what you are good at and what you enjoy. Then surround yourself with people that are great at what you are not. Remember, you are not a Cotton Headed Ninny Muggins.

3) “Its nice to meet someone that shares my affinity for elf culture.”

The key to success in digital marketing is connecting the right message to the right people at the right time. When you do, you increase the likelihood of a conversion. While this is not news to anyone, it is often overlooked. Hubspot published A Guide to Building a Killer Content Strategy that can help you get started.

4) “SANTA! OH MY GOD! I KNOW HIM!”

Find out what your audience is excited about and create content around that topic. There are a seemingly infinite number of listening tools available to discover what your audience is talking about, but MarketingProfs has provided a list of some of the most popular tools. You can’t overestimate the power of connecting with your audience directly through email or in-person over an espresso to find out their pain points and interests.

5) “You know my papa, he didn’t make master tinker till he was 490.”

Digital marketing requires time and patience. Two things that are a premium in business. We all want to have success NOW, but the truth is that it takes time to build relevance and authority for SEO, or to improve your Quality Score in paid search, or to develop and foster a community. Don’t give up!

Bonus: “There is room for everyone on the nice list.”

No relation to digital marketing. Just truth.

Happy Holidays!
